Honor the Earth - Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities Initiative

Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities Initiative focuses on re-localizing sustainable energy and food economies as a means to mitigate climate change and nurture cultural and spiritual restoration.  This initiative supports organizations working in two areas: Funding for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy grants and funding for Traditional Food Economies grants.  The Traditional Food Economies grants will be provided to organizations that utilize Indigenous wisdom and traditional methods to implement sustainable local food production systems. Possible funding for Food Social Ceremonial projects.

Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities Initiative focuses on re-localizing sustainable energy and food economies as a means to mitigate climate change and nurture cultural and spiritual restoration.    
The mission of Honor the Earth is to create awareness and support for Native environmental issues and to develop needed financial and political resources for the survival of sustainable Native communities. Grants are provided to Native organizations in the U.S. and Canada that are controlled by indigenous peoples. For the fall 2009 funding cycle, Honor the Earth will provide grants through the Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities initiative. This initiative supports organizations working in two areas: Funding for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy grants will be provided to organizations that improve weatherization and efficiency in buildings in Native communities and/or develop renewable energy projects that are contextualized within an ongoing program that preserves culture. Funding for Traditional Food Economies grants will be provided to organizations that utilize Indigenous wisdom and traditional methods to implement sustainable local food production systems.

Note: The spring application deadline has been extended to April 15th, 2011.  There is a spring (March 30) and a fall (September 30) deadline for applications.
