Projects must be of a conservation nature. Priority will be given to those projects that focus on activities that maintain, conserve or restore native (indigenous) fish and wildlife species and their habitat, i.e., "on-the-ground" activities.  Projects can include a wide range of activities, such as: improving spawning grounds, building bird houses, planting shrubs for cover, tagging / monitoring animals, restoring riparian areas, building waterfowl nesting floats and boxes, fencing, and improving winter range.

Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities Initiative focuses on re-localizing sustainable energy and food economies as a means to mitigate climate change and nurture cultural and spiritual restoration.  This initiative supports organizations working in two areas: Funding for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy grants and funding for Traditional Food Economies grants.  The Traditional Food Economies grants will be provided to organizations that utilize Indigenous wisdom and traditional methods to implement sustainable local food production systems.

The Conservation Fund is a long-term fund for eligible First Nations designed to support activities that maintain or improve the Great Bear Rainforest.  Some eligible projects revelevant to Guardian Watchmen programs include: Science, research, and monitoring for conservation; conservation, protected Area and cultural zone resource planning and management; protection/interpretation of biophysical or cultural resources; monitoring compliance with conservation management plans; habitat restoration activities; and capacity building (training, organizing, educating, relationship building).

The Economic Development Fund is a short-term fund for eligible First Nations designed to create sustainable businesses and community-based employment opportunities over seven years. The Fund supports environmentally sound and sustainable economic development activities and priority will be given to projects that have positive environmental or social impacts, direct or indirect.

The goal is to contribute to the conservation and protection of Canada’s biodiversity by supporting species recovery planning, habitat protection, and overall conservation and capacity building initiatives by Aboriginal people in Canada. The Aboriginal Capacity Building Fund supports Aboriginal organizations and communities across Canada in building capacity to enable their participation in the protection and recovery of species at risk.
