Regional Monitoring Strategy
Local Guardian Watchmen are collaborating and coordinating their monitoring efforts on the North and Central Coast of BC. The Regional Monitoring Strategy was developed because Coastal First Nation communities have a strong desire to monitor and understand the health and status of cultural and natural resources in the region and address common concerns.
The goals of the Regional Monitoring Strategy are to:
- develop a standardized approach to monitoring priority issues
- provide tools for communities to collect, store, and retrieve data
- compile and compare coast-wide data for use by communities and others
- empower communities to use the information in planning and decision-making
Coastal First Nation communities have identified key priority issues that will be monitored over time:
- Sport Fishing
- Tourism
- Enforcement
- Crab
- Whales, Bears and other Wildlife
- Impacts to Significant Sites
- Eulachon
The best indicators for monitoring each issue have been selected and standard monitoring methodologies and protocols chosen. An online data management allows local Guardian Watchmen programs to compile data, share information, analyze regional trends and report information in ways that meet the needs of their communities.
