2008 Coastal Guardian Watchmen Network Conference

The first annual Coastal Guardian Watchmen Network conference in 2008 brought together over 40 coastal Guardians, Watchmen, Rangers, resource practitioners and leaders representing over 12 First Nations to build unity and action in support of stronger community-based monitoring programs.

Conference participants had the opportunity to:

  • Discuss the roles and responsibilities of Guardians and Watchmen
  • Identify how Guardians and Watchmen will work to implement and monitor land and marine use plans on the ground (including the new Conservancies)
  • Learn about the successes and challenges of other First Nations Guardian and Watchmen programs
  • Discuss training opportunities for Guardians and Watchmen at Northwest Community College
  • Build alliances among communities to improve effectiveness of Guardian and Watchmen programs
  • Discuss funding opportunities for Guardian and Watchmen programs, including how to access conservation financing opportunities
